Hoya | MiyoSmart Myopia Control Eyeglass Lenses

Are you looking for a safe, child-friendly, clinically proven treatment option for your child’s ever-increasing nearsightedness? Hoya’s all-new MiyoSmart lenses offer parents a convenient myopia control product designed for children ages 6-18 who are nearsighted and showing signs of increasing nearsightedness.

Hoya’s MiYOSMART myopia control lenses have been clinically proven to reduce the rate of myopia or nearsighted progression by up to 59% and the axial elongation of the eye by 60%. The findings of this study were published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology and you can read the full article here: Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments (DIMS) spectacle lenses slow myopia progression: a 2-year randomized clinical trial

The unique D.I.M.S. (Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segment) design of the MiyoSmart lens delivers a unique approach for helping optometrists and parents in the management of myopia progression.

How Do MiyoSmart Lenses Work?

The MiyoSmart myopic control lens uses a proprietary honeycomb design. In fact, you can actually see the design on the surface of the lens when you look hard enough.

The centre of the lens offers a clear 9.4-mm optical zone, which is surrounded by a 33-mm honeycomb pattern of +3.50 diopter reading spheres.

The clear central optical zone allows for the light to be perfectly focused on the retina, providing your child with sharp vision in the distance and while reading. The peripheral honeycomb treatment zone causes the peripheral light to focus in front of the retina rather than behind the retina in traditional eyeglasses lenses. This induced peripheral lens blur seems to signal the eye to stop growing or elongating.

The lens design is very similar to a traditional single vision lens in terms of wearability and visual quality. However, some older children might experience increased peripheral glare while night driving.

Why Does Slowing the Rate of Myopia (Nearsightedness) Matter?

It’s estimated that 50% of the world will be myopic or nearsighted by 2050. Myopia has functional, lifestyle and eye health implications associated with it. Stronger eyeglasses can solve the initial complaint of blurred vision, but we need to try to slow down this progression. Unless you have a strong eyeglass prescription yourself, it’s tough to describe the visual limitations and lifestyle considerations that high myopia causes.

Myopia as low as only -1.00 D can increase your child’s risk of glaucoma, myopic maculopathy, retinal detachment and cataracts by 2-3 times in their lifetime. Higher levels of myopia, -7.00 D and above, can increase the risk of retinal detachment by 44x’s, cataracts by 6x’s, glaucoma by 3x’s and macula maculopathy by 127x’s (yes, this is not a typo). High myopia may also limit your child’s quality of vision and can even prevent them from being a candidate for refractive eye surgery in the future like LASIK or PRK.

Although myopia management is new in most primary care clinics, the idea is not. Myopia management has been extensively studied in Asian countries at the University of Waterloo School of Optometry here in Canada.

How Can I Order MiyoSmart Myopia Control Lenses?

To determine if your child is a candidate for MiyoSmart myopia control lenses, you will need to have a comprehensive eye exam with one of our optometrists.

All candidates will require a cycloplegic eye exam in addition to their regular eye exam to record a baseline value and to remove out any possible pseudo-myopia or accommodative hysteresis. This type of eye exam must also be repeated annually or semi-annually to check for progression.
