Contact Lenses: Extended Wear

For anyone wanting to wear their contact lenses for extended periods of time, healthy extended wear contact lenses may be a viable solution. These extended wear contact lenses come as both 2-Week and 1-Month disposable styles.

So who benefits from extended wear contact lenses? Patients who work long hours, are on call (doctors, fire department, nurses, new mothers), or have high prescriptions. Extended wear contact lenses can give a parent piece of mind that they can get up in the middle of the night to tend a crying child. Extended wear contact lenses can prevent over wear problems in people who routinely wear their contact lenses for 12-18 hours a day 7 days a week, as these contact lenses provide adequate oxygen to your eyes. Some extended wear contact lenses are also approved for up to 30 days and 30 nights of overnight wear.

Why not just get laser eye surgery? There are many reasons why laser eye surgery may not be in a patients best interest. The patient may not be a good candidate for laser eye surgery, or they may not wish to take the risk of undergoing laser eye surgery (no surgery is ever without risk). Financially, overnight contact lenses are also far more cost effective. Typical laser eye surgery can cost between $3,500 and $5,000 or the equivalent of 12-15 years of purchasing contact lenses and annual eye exams. The reality is that laser eye surgery is not permanent and your eyeglass prescription will continue to change in the future. Using contact lenses allows you to quickly update your prescription and ensure that you have optimal vision at all times.

Please note:  Extended wear contact lenses are not for everyone and not all contact lenses are approved for the same wear time. Please talk to you eye doctor before starting any extended contact lens regiment.
