Optical: Foggy glasses. Really ugh.

I'm sure all Canadians agree that foggy glasses are one of the  most frustrating things about winter (besides dirty windshields, wet feet, slippery sidewalks and bone-numbing cold).  It's pretty evident that the foggy glasses can put you in all kinds of awkward situations: walking into a coffee shop to meet your friend ... but you can't see them waving at you,  entering your warm home after shoveling your drive ... but not seeing your child's toy you just stepped on, checking out a steamy pipe at work ... and you're temporarily blinded.

Did you know that you can do something about your foggy glasses?  There is a lens produced by Essilor called Optifog.  This lens has a chemical (i.e. magic) component built into it which can be activated by wiping the foggy lens with a cloth aptly called the Optifog Activator Cloth

You can get Optifog lenses in almost every prescription - and they're not just for the winter!  Just think of all the times you went from an air conditioned building to the steamy heat of summer.  You can even put the lenses into sports goggles to help prevent fogging when you get sweaty!   Check out more about the lens at www.optifog.ca or come in and talk to one of our opticians at eye-bar for more information.

Eyewear Spotlight: Hally&Sons

The retro-style inspired eyewear shapes and keyhole nose designs found within the new Hally & Son eyewear collection remind us of the classic 1950-1960 era. We love the asymmetric temple accents, oversized end pieces and the attention to craftsmanship. These subtle details provide for visual interest from all angles, producing a truly unique high end look to the eyewear. The collection consists of both ophthalmic & sunglass models.

  • Prices start at $179.00

The Hally & Son eyewear collection is available in metal, water buffalo horn and replica horn. Unfortunately, we’ve discovered that real water buffalo horn cannot withstand the harsh dry cold Alberta environment, so unfortunately none of these pieces are on display at eye-bar.

Bespoking by Luke

Attending one of the largest optical shows in North America was extremely exciting.  One of the highlights was  spending several hours with British eyewear designer Tom Davies.  Not only did he show us the new acetate and titanium additions to his collection, but he also showed us first-hand how the customization process works.  In fact, Karlyn McTaggart, an eye-bar optician and eyewear makeover expert, ordered a customized frame for herself.

Tom schooled us in the importance of following the natural browline and fitting the bridge (aka. your nose) perfectly.  Color selection is just as important, as there are over 40 acetates and 30 titanium colors to choose from.  Selection of finish is also relevant, as there are 3 finishes to choose from for every acetate.  It was inspiring to see Tom at work.

In addition to the frames custom designed by eye-bar, we ordered an additional 30 pieces to enhance our Tom Davies selection process.  Each of these pieces can be purchased as ready-to-wear, or you may choose to customize it for fit, color and finish.  So why compromise?  Come in and have an eyewear makeover and explore the possibilities of the Tom Davies Bespoke Concept.  Made-to-measure eyewear is the next big thing, indulge yourself!

See Coat Blue by Nikon is a revolutionary new anti-reflective lens application designed to reduce the distracting glare caused by high intensity blue light. See Coat Blue lenses by Nikon help to improve contrast and reduce eye strain by partially filtering out blue light rays, thus reducing distracting light scatter within the eye. These lenses may help to reduce visual fatigue when working on computer screens, smart phones, tablets and LED TV screens. As such, eye-bar recommends using Sea Coat Blue anti-reflective lenses on all reading glasses and all computer or office specific eyewear.

This new lens application still contains all the same properties as regular See Coat lenses by Nikon, including: 2 times more scratch resistance, anti-static dust-repellent properties, optimized light transparency, and easy to clean smudge resistance.

Behind the Scenes: eye-bar Opticians

eye-bar opticians are the key to the perfect set of eye glasses. Sure, they have a lot of fun picking out frames that look good on you, but so much work goes on behind the scenes to get you the glasses you’ll love.

When you try on frames, their minds are busy considering how it looks (nose, ears, browline, skin tone, eye colour) and how the frames will fit into your lifestyle. After seeing your prescription, they’ll determine the most appropriate lens type (thinness, coatings, etc.) and the frame styles that can accommodate the lenses. All of these considerations ensure the most attractive finished product.

Once your frame and lenses are selected, measurements are recorded to ensure the lens is perfectly aligned with your pupil, where the optimal visual correction happens. This becomes especially important for progressive lens wearers. Progressive lenses may require several other measurements, taking into consideration your life and work style.

eye-bar opticians work like lens brokers when it comes to finding what’s best for you. They have expertise in every brand, lens material, and the latest technologies. With all of these choices available to them, they find the right lenses based on your personal needs. They accurately relay all of this important information to our labs where your lenses are created and properly mounted in your frames. After eye-bar’s final inspection, our opticians call you with the good news that your new glasses are in!

When you come to pick up your glasses, your eye-bar optician makes final adjustments and provides you with care and maintenance instructions based on the materials in your specific pair of glasses. Don’t forget you can stop in any time for a complimentary professional cleaning!

Foggy Lenses? Meet Optifog

Optifog, the new anti-fog lenses and applicator system from essilor is now available at eye-bar. This revolutionary lens care product is designed to help reduce lens fogging when going from a cold to warm situations.

Lens fogging can be both annoying and dangerous depending on when your eyeglasses start to fog up. By simply applying one drop of activator to the front and back of your eyeglass lenses after you clean them, you can help to reduce lens fogging for up to 1 week. The Optifog lens activator provides a protective hydrophilic barrier to the surface of the lens preventing water droplets from forming on the surface, and instead produces a uniform film of water that is undetectable to the wearer.

The new Optifog anit-fog lens system is available as an upgrade on a wide variety of essilor products. To learn more, stop by our clinic to talk to one of our licensed opticians

Cracked Windshield?

Over time our cars windshield can become pitted, scratched, and cracked (most Albertans know this first hand). We all know that a cracked windshield on our car can compromise the structural integrity and can potentially jeopardize our safety in the case of an accident.

But you might be surprised to know that a scratch or a crack on your safety eyewear can also compromises their structural integrity. Scratches on the surface of your lenses act like score lines, and reduce the overall ability of the lenses to protect your eyes. Scratch, cracked or pitted lenses also reduce your vision, further increasing the chance of an eye injury. So similar to your cars windshield, your safety eyewear needs to be inspected regularly for subtle wear and tear signs.

To fix or replace your cars windshield please visit one of Sherwood Parks local auto glass stores. To fix or replace your safety eyeglasses, please visit one of the expert opticians at eye-bar.

eye-bar stocks a large selection of safety eyewear from UVEX, On-Guard and the all new Wiley-X.

Paul Frank Industries Eyewear

It has been 5 months now since the debut of the Paul Frank Industries ophthalmic eyewear and sunglasses collections at eye-bar optician and sunglass specialists. The overall response to these lines has been incredible, and the timing couldn’t have been better! The Paul Frank Industries line encompasses the retro look and feel that is so in style these days. Big black plastic frames, with a hint of accenting colour to soften the look. As a result, the Paul Frank Industries line has done particularly well with young adults. The frames are all hand made and polished, and show great attention to detail.

Etnia Barcelona Eyewear

The Etnia Barcelona line seems to have found that delicate balance between classic appeal and trendy style. The ophthalmic collection contains both plastic and metal pieces, and the quality and workmanship of the product line has been phenomenal.

Exciting for this summer was the release of the Etnia Barcelona Sunglass Collection. These bold sunglass pieces have been a huge hit in our optical.

A cool fun fact to know about the Etnia Barcelona line is that all their frames are named after international cities such as: Abu Dhabi, Budapest, London, Moscow, and Edmonton. Just don’t tell the people in the south, apparently their city didn’t make the cut!
